The final of the Cameron Cup double rink bowling competition took place recently at the Tavira County BC. The final was played between the Parque da Floresta Ravens and Alvor and, despite an indifferent weather forecast, the sun shone and the playing conditions were first class. The PDF Ravens finally triumphed, the rink skipped by Alan Clarke winning by 34 shots to 9. On the other rink, Seamus Montgomery and his Alvor team beat the PDF team skippered by Ray Figg by 31 shots to 19.
It was a very competitive final, played in a relaxed and friendly manner, a credit to both clubs and a reflection of just how far the Algarve Bowling League has evolved and matured in a short space of time. So, at the end of the day, one winning rink each, but an overall victory for PDF by 53 shots to 40.
The playing surface at Tavira was excellent, allowing for some skilful bowling by both teams, and providing a very enjoyable event for the spectators who had travelled to support both teams. Bill and Joan Cameron and members at Tavira ensured the smooth running of the day and were responsible for the friendly and hospitable way in which all players and visitors were entertained. Bill Cameron, as chairman of the League and host for the day, presented the cup to the winning PDF Captain, Ray Figg, and awarded commemorative certificates to all the players involved.
Attention now turns to next October and the start of a new season. The league will then commence its third season of play and new Algarve bowling championships will be introduced, although the Cameron Cup will also continue. There are also plans to develop a coaching scheme and improve the general understanding of the rules and etiquette of the game.
The Algarve Bowling League exists to provide something to suit bowlers of all ages and abilities, and never loses sight of the friendly and social nature of their game. Anyone interested in joining should contact the league secretary, Jan McGlyn, on 282 315 326.
