THE ALGARVE has been named ‘Best Golf Destination in the World’ by Rheingolf magazine, the leading golf magazine in Germany’s Rhineland region.
The announcement was made at the Rheingolf exhibition in Cologne last weekend, where the Associação de Turismo do Algarve (ATA) was promoting the region.
The award serves to consolidate the Algarve’s image as an ideal destination for playing golf, not only among the German public and travel industry professionals, but also on an international level.
The ATA is keen to promote the Algarve’s golf product in Germany and 30 per cent of its promotional budget is being allocated to the German market this year, representing an investment of around 400,000 euros.
German wanted
The Algarve tourism association shared a stand at the Rheingolf event with six companies from the Algarve golf industry, which was decorated with striking imagery of the region’s golf courses, beaches and key tourism products.
The Rheingolf magazine is published quarterly and enjoys a circulation of around 20,000 copies, featuring news, events and holiday information for golfers throughout the whole of East Germany.
German golfers played a total of more than 30,000 rounds of golf on the Algarve’s 31 courses last year, which contributed to the record of one million rounds set in the region in 2006.
The Resident contacted the president of Algarve Golfe, Christopher Stilwell, who said: “I am very pleased about the award. The Algarve is trying to attract more German golfers to come to the Algarve as there has been a decrease in recent years. It is also superb that this comes so soon after the IAGTO award,” he said. In 2006, the Algarve was voted best golf destination in the world by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), an award it also won in the year 2000.
