A number of Algarve beaches have raised new Blue Flags this summer, among them Aljezur, Lagos, Lagoa, Albufeira and Castro Marim.
In fact, the Algarve is the region that boasts the most Blue Flags in Portugal (88).
Compared to 2015, the number is up by three with Amoreira Mar (Aljezur) and Rocha Baixinha (Albufeira) flying flags for the first time and Armona Ria (Olhão) back on the list.
All four Algarve marinas – Vilamoura, Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos – are also flying Blue Flags.
Portugal is the fifth European country with the most Blue Flags (314), trailing only behind Spain (579), Turkey (436), Greece (395) and France (379).
