Algarve Archaeological Association  tribute to Volker Huber

It is with great sadness that we record the death in May of Volker Huber. Many of our members will have counted him amongst their friends, or known him by repute for the part he played in the cultural activities of the Algarve. He was a founder member of the AAA and supported it unstintingly throughout its 20 years of activities.

The Association benefited not only from his and his wife Marie’s generosity in allowing it to use the Cultural Centre for its monthly lectures, as well as providing tea afterwards, but also for the many times they hosted committee meetings with lunch as well. The Association’s 10th anniversary was held in the Cultural Centre, with a buffet supper and an exhibition showing in pictures and artefacts its contribution to archaeological field work and its donations to assist in Portuguese archaeological projects. The 20th anniversary was celebrated by a gala evening at the Cultural Centre in 2002.

But, as well as the practical help, which made so many of the AAA’s aims and projects both possible and successful, Volker served on the committee from its inception, giving valuable service and advice and suggestions for its future activities. He really was a wonderful friend to the association, so that we will feel his loss for a long time to come and remember him with affection and gratitude for all that he did for us.

On behalf of all the members, we extend our deepest sympathy to Marie and her family, as well as the staff at the Cultural Centre for their great loss.
