In 1980, they were the first animal sanctuary to be established in the Algarve. Once an animal is in their care, they are protected for life. Their work has not only entailed the rescue of domestic animals but birds and other wildlife, plus an ongoing programme of sterilisation which they believe to be the only humane way to reduce the numbers of stray animals.

APAA, a registered Portuguese charity associated with the RSPCA, was formed by a small group of people dedicated to the wellbeing of animals. APAA not only shelters homeless animals but also puts a great effort into finding them new homes, either in Portugal or abroad.
