Praia da Marinha in the Algarve and the Porto Moniz lava pools in Madeira have made CNN’s list of the world’s “best beaches”.
The American news giant published an interactive article on the travel section of its website, detailing the best beaches to visit and when to do so.
Praia da Marinha, described as “one of the Algarve’s best-kept secrets”, was selected as one of the best to visit in September.
“Although Praia da Marinha sits in the heart of the Algarve vacation coast, it’s escaped the overdevelopment marring many of the region’s busy resorts,” writes CNN contributor Paul Ames.
“The cliffs are topped with greenery that bursts into flower in springtime. Despite its relative inaccessibility — down a country lane, then a climb down steps to reach the sand — the beach can get busy at the height of the summer.”
Ames adds that “for a few euros, you can jump aboard one of the skiffs offering trips to nearby sea caves: the light-filled dome of Benagil grotto is breathtaking.”
The other Portuguese entry on the list, said to be perfect to visit in April, “is not technically a beach, but the lava pools on the remote, northwestern tip of Madeira Island are one of the most beautiful places to take a dip in the ocean, anywhere”.
“The pools are refilled with seawater — and some decorative sea creatures — at high tide. Madeira’s subtropical climate means all-year bathing in the pools’ clear, blue water. The pool complex offers 3,800 square meters (41,000 square feet) of swimming space including a kids’ pool,” the article reads.
