Algarve aces

World No504 Pedro Sousa sensationally put out the No2, 3 and 5 seeds to reach the final of last week’s ITF Futures Faro tournament.

The CIF Lisbon player was then narrowly beaten 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 by Slovakian Kamil Capkovic.

The second of these men’s ATP-ranking points Algarve events is currently taking place in Loule, before the action moves to Lagos on Sunday.

At the same time Faro-born Rui Machado’s two victories over Slovakian opponents contributed greatly to his country’s 4-1 Davis Cup Euro-African zone play-off victory last weekend, a win which sees Portugal’s men travel to Roger Federer-led Switzerland for the next round of tennis’s top team competition.
