ALGAR, the region’s solid waste management company, will be trying out a new tactic to increase the amount of recyclable waste collected – it will be providing a door-to-door pickup service.
“We have found that a lot of recyclable material is still not adequately sorted by the population,” ALGAR said, adding that 30% of recyclables are still thrown into organic waste bins.
The new system will first be tested in one municipality (yet to be decided) and then expanded to the whole region if it proves successful.
The plan is part of the company’s goal to increase the amount of recyclable waste collected per year to 800 tons.
