Alcoutim’s plans for growth dismissed by government

Two projects that were expected to dynamise the economy of the inland town of Alcoutim, in the eastern Algarve, have been dismissed by the government.

Alcoutim Câmara says a bridge linking the town to Sanlúcar de Guadiana on the Spanish side of the river Guadiana is not considered a priority by the government.

In response to questions posed by the PCP political party in Parliament, the government showed “little interest” for the bridge project as well as a road project, the IC27, to connect Alcoutim to Albernoa, in Beja (Alentejo), said the câmara.

“It is a shame that two important infrastructures for the development of the northeast Algarve and southeast Alentejo regions, two of the most impoverished in the European Union, have received such disinterest from central government,” stated the câmara, adding that municipalities in these regions are not being provided with the support they need to achieve economic and social growth.
