Alcoutim is the No 1 Portuguese municipality when it comes to online property searches by house hunting foreigners. This is the result of a recent survey by property consultants Idealista, which puts Porto Moniz (Madeira), Pedrógão Grande (Leiria) and Nordeste (São Miguel island, in the Azores) in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. All these municipalities share the fact that they have a low resident population (less than 5,500 citizens) in areas that are otherwise well known for international tourism.
