Albufeira wants to become premier sports destination

Following the successful European Cross Country Championship in Albufeira in December, the European Athletics Association has asked the Municipality of Albufeira to organise the 2013 World Cup Cross Country Championship.

The President of the European Athletics Association, Hansjörg Wirz, considered the Algarve event last month one of the best ever thanks to “the brilliant organisation”, the turnout of spectators, excellent weather conditions and the outstanding quality of the cross country route.

Meanwhile, Albufeira’s promotional agency (APAL) has developed an online campaign with sports operators to strengthen the position of Albufeira as a premier destination for sports. APAL’s aim is to put Albufeira on the map, not only as a destination for cross country but also other sports, such as athletics and football, encouraging a larger number of athletes to come to the area for training.

This action is also intended to increase revenue from sports facilities in Albufeira and to develop a product that can contribute to boost tourism in the low season.
