Albufeira council has applied for government funding to create more free Wi-Fi areas in the borough.
Dubbed ‘Albufeira Online’, the project is expected to cost €179,000 and will hopefully see €160,000 funded by the state.
It is hoped that residents and tourists will be able to get free internet access in popular areas such as Praça da República square, Paderne castle and the Pescadores and Olhos d’Água beaches.
The Sant’Ana church, Praça dos Pescadores, Samora Barros art gallery and Largo Engº Duarte Pacheco are other areas due to be equipped with free Wi-Fi.
The funding programme (Linha de Apoio à Disponibilização de Redes Wi-Fi) is managed by national tourism entity Turismo de Portugal and has €3.5 million to go around.
Projects presented by public entities can be funded up to 90% of their total cost.
