A series of concerts will be taking place every Saturday night until mid-June at churches in the borough of Albufeira.
Over 20 musicians, from guitar duos to quartets and quintets, will be performing free concerts as part of an initiative organised by the Algarve Accordion Association.
All concerts will be held on Saturdays at 9pm and will also be streamed live online at www.maisalgarve.pt as well as on Albufeira Council’s Facebook and YouTube pages. Seats will be limited and audience members will be required to wear masks.
The first concert took place last Saturday at Albufeira’s Nossa Senhora da Orada chapel, featuring the guitar duo of Manuel Toucinho and Marco Massano.
Festivities continue this Saturday (May 22) with a performance by Duo Black and White (accordionists Sérgio Gladkyy and Maxim Nedobezhkin) at Paderne church, while Boliqueime church will host a performance by a flute quintet including Inês Paiva, João Rabasquinho, Maria Coutinho, Rui Caeiro and Mariana Rosário on May 29.
The initiative will continue with a performance by a string quartet – Isabel Carvalhaes (violin), Lizana Maciel (violin), João Sousa (viola) and Ana Correia (cello) – at Ferreiras church on June 5, followed by a concert by a saxophone quartet – Catarina Monteiro (soprano), Jorge Marquez (alto), Daniel Caetano (tenor) and André Roxo (baritone) – at Olhos de Água’s Nossa Senhora de Fátima chapel on June 12.
The final event is planned for Albufeira’s Matriz church on June 19, with an ensemble of talented musicians – Gonçalo Pescada (accordion), Rebecca Christophers (violin), Marta Justino (violin), Elisabete Martins (viola) and Eduard Zlatkin (double bass) – interpreting pieces by Argentine tango composer and virtuoso bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla.
