Albufeira race attracts 700 mountain bikers

Mountain bikers will be cycling along some of the most emblematic locations in Albufeira

The third edition of ‘Race Nature Albufeira’ will take place between January 26-28, with 700 mountain bikers due to take part.

After the success of its first editions in 2022 and 2023, the event is returning with a new record number of participants, which include hundreds of federated and non-federated mountain bikers who, for three days, will be cycling along some of the most emblematic locations in Albufeira.

The event will be divided into an optional prologue and two stages: the 4km prologue will take place on January 26 at 7pm, starting at Praça dos Pescadores, while the two stages (a 1.75km stage on January 27 and a 2.65km stage on January 28) will begin at 9am.

José Carlos Rolo, the mayor of Albufeira, has highlighted the importance of hosting these kinds of sports events for the local economy.

“We must not forget that the 700 athletes are accompanied by family and friends, stay in our hotels, dine in our restaurants, and shop in local businesses, contributing over these three days to the revitalisation of the municipality’s economy,” he said.

“At the same time, they get to know the most emblematic places and landscapes of the region, later serving as a kind of ‘promotional agent’ of the Algarve,” Rolo added.

The deputy mayor of Albufeira, Cristiano Cabrita, went on to stress that “Albufeira has all the right conditions for hosting outdoor and indoor sports events,” allowing the municipality to establish itself as a year-round sports tourism destination.

“In addition, our sports facilities are prepared to host major national and international events, giving us guarantees that, in 2026, we will be the European Capital of Sport,” he said.

Cabrita added that the municipality has been preparing for this by organising or co-organising major national and international sports events in the municipality, such as the Albufeira Skate Challenge, the São Silvestre Race, the ‘Volta ao Algarve’ cycling competition, the Youth Basket Festival and other major sports events.
