Two hundred athletes representing 14 countries are expected to participate from September 24 to 30
Albufeira has once again been chosen to host the Boat Angling World Championship. After a two-year break, the event is back off the coast of Albufeira from September 24 to 30. Two hundred athletes representing 14 countries are expected to participate, with Portugal being represented by the national teams in both the junior and senior categories.
“Albufeira has the ideal conditions for nautical sports, and the people of Albufeira are amazing hosts”, says Carlos Vinagre, president of the Portuguese Federation of High Seas Sport Fishing (FPPDAM), organiser of what will be the 57th edition of the senior competition and the 21st junior competition.
The opening ceremony will take place on September 25, at 16:00, opposite the Town Hall. It will be followed by a parade of the delegations through the city streets, passing by the Albufeira fishing community’s emblematic and prominent landmarks.
The Championship boats will head out to sea on September 26, 27, 28 and 29, with the competition scheduled to start daily at 08:00. Contest participants will then compete to capture the largest number of specimens or the largest specimen of the season.
The daily catch will be presented during a ceremony at 17:00, during which the results will be monitored in detail. All the fish caught will then be offered by the FPPDAM to social solidarity institutions.
“This is yet another opportunity to enhance our coast, Albufeira’s potential, and of course, to promote the city and the local economy, without ever neglecting the sporting nature of the event”, underlines José Carlos Rolo, president of Albufeira’s City Council.
The event’s official closing and prize-giving ceremony will take place on September 30, at 19:00, at the Hotel Auramar, in Albufeira.
