Fernando Santos, the manager of Portugal’s national football team, is to be honoured at Albufeira’s sports gala next month.
The annual ceremony celebrates the achievements of local athletes, coaches, clubs and associations during the sports season, and the local council always tries to invite a national figure to spark interest.
This year, the council chose the man who qualified Portugal for the Euro 2016 and named his team one of the front-runners to win. In fact, since Santos has taken the reins, Portugal has yet to lose an official match.
The 61-year-old is also the first Portuguese to have coached every team of the country’s ‘Big Three’ (Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting).
Starting at 9pm on February 12, the ceremony will take place at the local sports pavilion.
