Albufeira Council has removed around 75 tons of rubbish that had been dumped on a plot of land adjacent to the town’s bus terminal.
The clean-up operation lasted four days and involved a team of 20 workmen and heavy machinery.
Among the rubbish were 5.5 tons of large-scale items such as furniture.
Albufeira Mayor José Carlos Rolo admitted that the presence of litter in the area had been a major cause for concern “for a long time”.
“This area is often the first thing people see when they arrive in Albufeira and it did not represent the town,” he said.
Rolo assured that authorities will be monitoring the area much closer to avoid a repeat of the situation.
“I am certain that we all want the entrance to our town to be clean and pleasant. We all need to work together to achieve this,” the mayor concluded.
