Albufeira citizens vote to renew Guia sports complex

Albufeira council has announced that it will be renovating Guia’s sports complex following the results of the municipality’s ‘Orçamento Participativo’ (OP), which allows local citizens to suggest and vote for their own projects.
The project received 318 of the 1020 votes and will cost €54,500.

As the ‘Orçamento Participativo’ had a €100,000 budget, the rest of the money will go towards the second most voted project, the renovation of the playground at Albufeira’s primary school Escola Básica nº1. This is expected to cost around €40,000.

“Even though it is a small investment, the project is very important for the school’s children, who will now have a more inviting and safe place to play,” Mayor Carlos Sousa e Silva explained.

This was the second time that Albufeira has organised an OP, which its mayor promises is here to stay, giving locals more chance to propose solutions to problems they face in their day-to-day life.

Intriguingly, the mayor made no reference to the 66 locals who face losing their homes over council mismanagement (see Demolition shock rocks Albufeira apartments) and has avoided all our efforts at contact to discuss the controversy.
