Albufeira beachgoers told to “keep away from cliffs”

Beachgoers in Albufeira are again being warned about the dangers of seeking shade too close to the base of cliffs in an awareness campaign taking place until the end of August.

Despite the informative campaigns that are repeated each summer, and the warning signs placed at the entrance to beaches and on cliff faces, beachgoers insist on sitting too close to unstable cliffs.

In Albufeira, the issue gained added importance ever since a family of five was killed by falling rocks on Albufeira’s Maria Luísa beach in August 2009.

Authorities carry out controlled demolitions regularly, but the risk is ever present.

The first awareness campaign was held at Praia dos Pescadores and Praia do Peneco on Tuesday (July 2). Upcoming initiatives will take place at São Rafael and Arrifes on July 12, Castelo and Coelha on July 16, Evaristo and Manuel Lourenço on July 19, Galé on July 23 and Salgados on July 26.

In August, they will be held at Rocha Baixinha and Falésia (6), Barranco das Belharucas (9), Olhos de Águas (13), Maria Luísa (16), Santa Eulália (23), Oura (27) and Inatel and Alemães (30).
