20 Portuguese citizens who have been working in Afghanistan have been successfully airlifted out of the country, confirmed the ministry of foreign affairs today. The group had been variously employed supporting NATO, the delegation of the European Union or working in civil aviation in the country. Meantime, minister for internal administration Eduardo Cabrita has said Portugal will start receiving Afghan refugees “as soon as possible”. They are expected to be Afghans who worked with the European Union and with ‘other institutions’, he said. Portugal has already agreed to take up to 50 Afghan refugees.
