Maritime police are still searching air and sea for a 55-year-old fisherman dragged off his boat while releasing octopus tackle into the waters.
The accident happened early this morning (Friday May 16) five miles off the coast of Praia do Ancão (Loulé).
According to TVI, a colleague threw himself into the water after the man to try and save him but he was “caught up in the tackle and never came back to the surface”.
The fact that the man was also wearing rubber boots will have hampered survival, said the news service, as these act as “anchors” in this kind of situation.
The alert went out just before 8am this morning. Searches are still ongoing.
TVI reports there were only two men in the fishing boat – and the second man managed to swim back to safety.
