The number of people working for Portugal’s Ministry of Agriculture has been reduced by half since 2004. According to Expresso newspaper, in 2004 a total of 12,255 people were employed by the agriculture ministry while now there are around 6,000 people. The period between 2004 and 2007 saw the steepest reduction in staff numbers (-4,457). At one point, Lisbon central government alone employed a workforce of nearly 5,000.
