Migrants drown off Morocco

AT LEAST 14 people, including six infants, have reportedly drowned after a boat trying to reach Europe illegally capsized off the Moroccan coast. The crowded rubber vessel was carrying more than 100 would-be migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, officials said. A search is under way for survivors, but Moroccan authorities say most of those aboard the boat made it ashore safely. Thousands of illegal immigrants attempt the risky sea crossing from Morocco to Spain every year. Local police say four members of the Moroccan coast guard have been arrested in connection with the latest deaths.

Animal kills nine people

A MARAUDING animal has killed at least nine people and wounded 11 in rural Malawi. The attacks happened in the central district of Dedza, about 70 kilometres south of the capital, Lilongwe. Some victims identified the animal as a hyena, while others thought it might be a lion, police spokesman Kelvin Maigwa said. Armed officers were sent to the area with game rangers from the Department of Parks and Wildlife to destroy the animal. The Dedza district hospital started receiving casualties at around 3am, said District Health Officer, Dr. Isyu Mwakasungula. “Most of them had facial wounds, while others, especially the dead, were attacked in the stomach,” he said. Two years ago, at least three people were killed and 16 injured by what was believed to be a rabid hyena in the central Dowa district.
