news: AFPOP hits 10,000

AFPOP, the Association for foreign residents and visitors to Portugal, reached a landmark recently, when they welcomed their 10,000th member — Frederic Cavanagh, a Dutchman in the process of moving to Portugal from his native Holland. Frederic was very pleased when he went to the AFPOP office in Portimão, and discovered that he was the 10,000th person to sign up for membership of AFPOP. He was even happier when he discovered that there were one or two small perks to being member 10,000. Frederic is in the process of setting up a business here specialising in dolphin watching trips, and is actively supporting the research and protection of dolphins and other sea life. Frederic told us why he had become an AFPOP member. “After coming to the Algarve since the early 80’s, I finally made the step of moving and setting up a new business here.It all feels like a great new adventurefull of surprises and I want to be sureto get the right adviceso I choseAFPOP to be myguide.”

AFPOP’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Reeve explains; “We had already decided that we were going to give the lucky person free AFPOP membership for the first year, along with a bottle of champagne to celebrate. We were delighted when Mr. Gerd Böhmer, of Victoria insurance group, told us that Victoria is celebrating 75 years of working in Portugal this year and offered a year’s free household insurance to the lucky member also. We wish Frederic well with his new venture and hope that his confidence in AFPOP proves to be well founded.”

The new President of AFPOP, Pat Roberts was in the AFPOP office when Mr. Cavanagh joined the Association, and told us, “It was a great pleasure for me to be able to welcome Mr. Cavanagh personally to AFPOP, especially as this milestone comes so early in my tenure. I hope that I will have the chance to welcome many new members throughout my time as AFPOP’s President. I would also like to thank Mr. Böhmer for his generous offer, and I congratulate Victoria on their anniversary this year.”
