AFPOP Autumn Festival 2006

THE ASSOCIATION for foreign residents and visitors to Portugal, AFPOP, held its annual sports events, as part of the AFPOP Autumn Festival, over the last week of September and the first week of October.

The first event was the golf tournament, which took place at Boa Vista golf club in Luz. In all, 16 golfers took to the field for a Pairs Stableford, nearest the pin on two par three holes and nearest the line drive on the 13th hole competitions.

Overall, the tournament was won by Alun Roberts and Mike Saunders, who were awarded the inaugural Gerry Lane Memorial trophy, donated to AFPOP by Mr. Lane’s family. Gerry, who recently passed away, was not only an AFPOP member, but was also the founder member of The Algarveans theatre group and the Algarve fundraiser for the Leprosy mission in Portugal. The trophy will be awarded to the winners of the AFPOP golf tournament each year.

Nearest the pin winners were Jim Stewart and Jenny Herrtage, who each received golf bags donated by Bill Goff of Golf Tours. Nearest the line winners, who each received a custom-made driver by Roger Morton at Proper Golf 2000, were Alun Roberts and Jenny Herrtage, who also won the prize for highest ladies score – a gift pack donated by Crystal Clear Skincare.

To round off the day, lunch was provided courtesy of Lloyd & Whyte International Insurance Brokers. Thanks go, once again, to Tony Walton and his colleagues at the Boa Vista Golf Club for their assistance and enthusiasm.

The second event was the Clue Walk around the Estoi area. The route and clues were devised by Eberhard Gaede and Maria Antunes. All 17 walkers enjoyed the day, with the German trio Schardin winning first prize with the most correct answers. Pat and Terry Allen were second and Allen, Martin and Christine Kendrick, third. All winners received bottles of wine. The walk was sponsored by GIC Insurance and Biomonte Lda.

The tennis tournament was held at Carvoeiro Clube de Ténis, with 32 players taking part in a Mixed-Mixed event. Thomas Decker, the AFPOP Eastern Algarve Representative and Maureen Mayhew won the AFPOP members prizes, which were donated by Medal Insurance Brokers. Maureen ended the day on equal points with Don Sykes and John Hunt, who received tennis shirts donated by Ronald Henneberke of CCdT. Prizes for non-AFPOP members, sports bags and a 50 euro shopping voucher each, were won by Marion Moeler and a holidaymaker staying at the Carvoeiro Clube de Ténis.

The bowls competition was again held at the Santo António Bowls Club in Alvor. The winners were a team of three from Cobham in Kent, runners-up were AFPOP members Terry and Irene Kerr and Pauline Wilson.

For the second year running, the bowls event was sponsored by ALJALOCA, a local construction company from Carvoeiro.

AFPOP President, Christopher Stephen, congratulated all bowlers on a splendid days sport and, on behalf of AFPOP thanked the Santo António Club, in particular Connie Borrell, for their help to make the tournament a success.

The Autumn Festival culminated with the bridge tournament at the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra, organised by Jack Job and Tony Webster. The tournament was won by Vina Maia and Harry van Houwelingen, with Marie Rose and Fergal McGuiness runners-up, who all received bottles of wine.

AFPOP would like to thank all event organisers and individual sponsors of each event for their hard work, enthusiasm, generosity and support and, of course, all those who took part.
