Adoption figures

Left wing political party, Bloco de Esquerda, is calling for the government to establish a national day to mark the adoption of children.

The request comes as figures relating to the number of adoptions in Portugal have been released revealing that of the 11,000 children living in government regulated children’s homes more than 2,000 are suitable to be legally adopted with the majority of children available for adoption in Portugal being under the age of 10.

Between 2003 and 2008, 53 foreign children have been adopted by Portuguese citizens while 35 Portuguese children were adopted by foreign residents.
