Administrative cock-up sees over 1000 dead people receiving pensions

“Confusion” between Social Security and Caixa Geral de Aposentações (the authority paying out pensions) saw 1,090 people receiving State pensions for as many as six months after they had died, writes national tabloid Correio da Manhã.

The administrative cock-ups were only flagged by the Tribunal de Contas (TC – Accounts Court), and only now are “diligencies” in place to try and recover the money.

With no indication, yet, as to what sums are involved, CM explains the problem is exacerbated by the fact that the pensions were paid out in 2013.

The TC has been equally baffled by the case of 35 people whose dates of birth have been given as AFTER their recorded deaths, adds the paper.

“In the majority of cases, the dates of death are given as January 1850, with birth dates ranging from 1850 to 1996.

“The confusion has led the TC to open an independent audit to make responsible those responsible”, it concludes.
