The number of legal abortions in Portugal has increased by 9% between 2008 and 2011 – a further 1,683 abortions were performed during that period. According to 2011 figures by the Directorate-General for Health, 20,290 abortions were performed in Portugal; in 2010, the number stood at 20,137.
