A TRUCK driver has become the first person to be killed on the Via do Infante (A22) in 2007.
The victim, 44-year-old Mario Ferreira Gomes, was killed on impact in the accident on January 29. He was a resident of Sobredo in Algoz, Silves.
It is reported that Mario lost control of the 40 ton tow-truck at the Boliqueime exit and overturned into the opposite slip road after attempting to manoeuvre a sharp 90 degree bend. No other vehicles were involved.
The truck overturned on the drivers side and Gomes died immediately. The body was removed and taken to Faro hospital for an autopsy.
According to the Brigada de Trânsito de Albufeira, the truck was on route to Albufeira and the driver must have “lost control due to the weight and not managed to complete the sharp 90 degree turn”. There were no signs of skid marks on the road or any damage to the tyres.
The fatality is the first on the 128 kilometre stretch of road since 2005.
