FORGET FAME Academy, Pop Idol and The X-Factor, for the Algarve hosted a talent contest of its own last weekend, the winner of which was a band featuring a member of our production team here at The Resident no less!
Yes, it is all very exciting – we have just discovered that we have a budding rock star in our midst.
Unbeknown to many of us in the office, Paulo Silvestre, co-ordinator of The Resident’s ‘What’s On’ section, had been rehearsing with his band Boshidah to take part in the fourth edition of the Noise Sessions Band Contest, which took place at Clube Recreativo de Cabanas, in Tavira, last weekend.
After sending in a demo tape to the event organisers some months ago, Boshidah was selected from a long list of groups to play live on Friday, November 18, in one of two semi-finals. Two groups from each semi-final were chosen to go through and fight it out in the grand final. Boshidah obviously impressed the judges, as did Alta Tensão from Faro, Project 103 from Lagos (both qualifiers from the November 12 semi-final) and Sator from Olhão (the other successful band from the November 18 semi-final).
Boshidah, who describe their music as ‘alternative metal’, was formed in 2002 and joining Paulo, who, by the way, is the bass player, are vocalist Jamie Parkison from Liverpool, the only non-Portuguese member in the group, guitarist Martinho, drummer Alexandre Cunha and Renato also on guitar.
It all went well on the night as Boshidah rose to the occasion, giving a knockout performance to beat off stiff competition in the final on Saturday and be crowned as the winner of the contest. Paulo and the boys walked off with a cheque for 300 euros and a voucher for a weekend stay in the Golden Club luxury hotel in Cabanas.
Congratulations Paulo, you have made us proud, but don’t think that this will get you out of making the tea!
