Continuing my focus on Algarve wines in this column, here is something totally new on the market from Quinta dos Vales, one of the Algarve’s top producers of high-quality wine. WANTED is already available at some supermarkets, costing €19.90. Look out for it in Intermarché or Auchan supermarkets or pay a visit to the winery in Estômbar which has now reopened to the public on weekdays after a brief closure during the Covid lockdown.
The reds from this producer can always be relied on to be elegant and balanced wines and they are never launched until they are ready to drink, hence this 2016 only hitting the market now.
What we have here is a medium- to full-bodied fruit-driven red with lush berry and plum notes on the nose.
In spite of having spent 10 months in new French oak barrels, the oak is hardly noticeable and very well integrated. In the mouth, there are well-rounded tannins balancing with a fresh acidity and a very slight sweetness.
This is one of the limited production premium labels from Quinta dos Vales being launched this year. Look out also for the Alicante Bouschet Blanc de Noir and the Pinot Noir rosé, both exclusively in magnum format.
