Intensive rehearsals begin soon for the first of the Christmas series of concerts given by St. Julian’s School in Carcavelos. First off the block will be ‘A Musical Evening’, on Thursday, December 2, presented by St. Julian’s Strings, which will include solo and small group items, as well as pieces performed by the String Orchestra.
St. Julian’s Strings is a project that was started a little over two years ago, after it was decided to introduce string instruments to as many children as possible in the school. A huge response at the outset meant that around 40 children started playing a variety of string instruments. With a mixture of hard work, enthusiasm, a love of their instruments and music, they progressed quickly giving their first concert performance at the Primary School Christmas Assembly in December 2002.
In order to keep this momentum going and to further their standards, the group has now been expanded to include members of the Senior School and so is now a whole school orchestra.
The Musical Evening will be the debut of this new ensemble, which will present a delightfully varied programme of light music, including Strauss Waltzes and even a little light ‘pop’. To give the orchestra a much-needed rest between items, soloists for the evening are Joanna Santos on violin, Fabiana Goldszal on viola and Alice Heidler on cello.
This will be followed up with a treat for the shoppers at the Riviera Shopping Centre in Carcavelos at 7pm on Thursday December 9 when customers will be able to shop to the sounds of the orchestra as they bring their music into the community.
Tickets for the concert on December 2, which starts at 7.30pm are four euros each and can be obtained from the school’s Primary or Senior School offices. All enquiries to David Higginbottom, Tel/fax: 214 563 751 or email [email protected].
