Schools out tomorrow: teachers hold new strike

A month from start of new school term, “teachers are preparing protests”

“Teachers desire the same as President Marcelo”, says SIC Notícias today: a calm school year. But until the government comes up with a proposal for the six years, six months and 23 days cut out of their careers, with the subsequent loss of pension credits, they are going to “fill the streets to show their discontent”, says the station. One month from the end of the long school summer holidays, and there is no sign of a calm school year ahead. In fact, things can only get worse, in terms of the national shortage of teachers – by December this year, another 3,500 teachers will have taken retirement with very little in terms of young intake coming through.
