Children of the Lifetime Martial Arts Algarve Club have enjoyed a busy summer, visiting various locations for training workshops and sporting events, fundraising and working hard towards building healthy lifestyles.
The group, run by Irishman Ian Donnelly, a 3rd Dan Black Belt who has competed at European and world Tae Kwon Do championships, spent a day at Iceland supermarket in Guia last month bag-packing for customers to raise funds for the non-profit club.
Ian told the Algarve Resident: “It was a great day and experience for everyone. I send a big thank you to all at Iceland and the shoppers who donated. It is very much appreciated.”
He added that the group has had a “fantastic year”, with a seminar and visits from 7th Dan Master Frank Murphy, a trip to Lisbon for the Portugal Open, attending a referee’s course in Loures and also taking part in the Algarve International Fair.
“The coming months look very busy with a demonstration in Algoz on October 29 followed by a visit from the Portuguese national martial arts team, and a trip to Malaga, Spain, in November for a workshop and seminar,” he said.
For the month of October, children at the martial arts club will also be participating in anti-bullying workshops and carrying out a goal-setting programme that will help the children in their daily routines.
“They will be asked to set for themselves four goals that they want to achieve over the coming month. Goals can be school-work, family, community or environment related, such as a child wanting to start paper recycling at home, being nicer to their siblings, getting better grades in class, or whatever else they set their mind to,” said Ian.
At the end of the month, a celebration will be held to commend the children for their achievements.
“It is great fun and very motivational for them. Our goal is to help our students learn and bring out the best in themselves mentally and physically,” Ian concluded.
The Lifetime Martial Arts Algarve Club practices the original Korean art of ITF Tae Kwon Do.
Classes are held on Mondays and Thursdays in Albufeira, where the group meets at a studio (400 meters south of the Bull Ring roundabout), with ages 4 to 6 from 5.30pm, ages 7 to 12 from 6.30pm and teens to adults from 7.30pm. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, classes are held at the same times in Almancil’s Villas and Vacations Tennis Centre.
