A highly recommended evening

A wine and food pairing event took place at Le Meridien Penina Hotel near Portimão on August 5, featuring wines produced at the Alentejo-based Herdade dos Grous.

Different wines were served to match the four courses prepared especially for the evening, which included cuttlefish ink risotto with slow-poached rabbit matched with Herdade dos Grous 23 Barricas 2009, beef fillet mignon with red onion and fresh fig chutney matched with Moon Harvest 2009 and Ice red berries with Bols Natural Yoghurt sauce matched with Bols Natural Yogurt liquor.

The Algarve Resident’s Mike Cross attended the event with his wife Pia.

He said: “The wine and food pairing evening was a combination of the best food and wine we have had in the Algarve for a very long time. It is our experience that some establishments have sacrificed quality in an effort to improve profit margins in a tough economic environment.”

A bilingual sommelier introduced the wines before each course.

He added: “The event at the hotel’s Le Grill restaurant combined top quality wines with an inventive and delicious menu in a restaurant with wonderful ambience and great service at a very reasonable price (€39 per person including wines).

“A bilingual sommelier from Herdade dos Grous gave a brief and informative introduction before each course. We have recommended our friends to attend future events.”

A date for the next wine and food pairing event is yet to be announced.
