During these dark days that are threatening the very fabric of our society, East Algarve Walking Football has moved swiftly to support the local communities in Olhão and Tavira. Family-run cafés, used by the players before and after their weekly sessions, are struggling to survive, so EAWF has sold vouchers to their members to generate funds to give a cash injection to the cafés in their hour of need. The vouchers will be redeemed at the cafés when the pandemic is over, and life returns to some semblance of normality.
In addition, players who were booked to participate in a Walking Football Tournament in Mallorca in May have generously donated their refunds to a fighting fund to help the community as and where required.
The first delivery of food and essentials has been made to the Red Cross in Tavira and a similar scheme is being launched, through SC Olhanense, in Olhão. Players have also been asked to donate their weekly subscriptions to the fund and, in return, will be entered into a weekly football-related draw.
Walking Football was introduced to the Algarve nearly six years ago and since then a number of charities and youth sports groups have benefited from their support.
