International Women in Portugal is a non-profit making association, which was founded in September 1991 and is based around the Cascais/Lisbon area. IWP Secretary, Karen A Redmayne, explains more about the group:
Our aim is to offer friendship and understanding to women who are living here in Portugal – helping women to feel at home and adjust to their new life in a new country. With this in mind, the IWP arranges a wide range of events and activities.
The Executive Board and wider committee of the IWP act as the management of the club, with the support of an office manager. Equally important to the success of the club are the Activities Captains, who organise the many interest groups that meet on a regular basis throughout the year. The activities offered include arts and crafts, wining and dining, mothers and children, language and culture, sport, games and current affairs. For many women, these groups offer the opportunity to pursue a favourite interest, make good friends and broaden their horizons.
The IWP also holds a coffee morning twice a month, which gives the opportunity to meet and chat. From time to time, we also have guest speakers to talk on a wide variety of subjects. Recent topics include hair care, dermatology and life in Mongolia. The club also organises regular visits and cultural tours to local places of interest such as the JP vineyards, Belém, old Cascais and Mafra. Another facet of the club is fund-raising and collecting donations for local charities and we have members, who are regular volunteers, working with these charities. The IWP also offers neighbourhood and language ‘amigas’ to help new arrivals to Portugal find their feet. Our publication Feeling At Home in Portugal also contains many pages of useful information, not only for those who have recently arrived in Portugal.
The club also produces a monthly magazine, A Janela, which is the main way in which the club communicates its activities with the membership. The magazine also includes other articles covering, for example, news and information about the area, topical issues, health matters and short stories.
Come along
Each year, the IWP holds an Activities Fair, where it is possible to talk to the Activities Captains to gain first-hand information about the interest groups. Many local businesses that may be of help to newcomers, such as language schools, are represented at the Business Coffee Morning. Please take the opportunity to come to our next Business Coffee Morning and Fair to see what the International Women In Portugal has to offer.
