Portimonense ended a winless run stretching back to October 5 by overcoming Sporting Braga B 3-2 last Saturday afternoon.
A disappointing first half saw the home side rarely threatening Victor Golas in the opposition’s goal and the visitors duly took the lead on the half-hour mark through the excellent Fábio Martins.
Parity was restored 10 minutes later when Zambujo latched on to a through ball from Fernandinho to volley home from the edge of the area – but Portimonense soon found themselves in arrears again when keeper Ricardo Ferreira conceded a penalty just before the interval which Martins easily converted.
Manager Vitor Maçãs’ men displayed more urgency during the second playing period without, however, making any significant progress on the final third of the pitch.
Not sensing any real threat from the home side, Braga appeared content to defend their lead and were duly punished.
With only six minutes of regular time remaining, Captain Ricardo Pessoa brought the Algarveans level from a well-taken free kick before Fidelis scored the winner from a corner to seal an unlikely victory at the death.
“Important was the win despite not playing well,” Maçãs said afterwards. “We were twice behind and the team showed desire, albeit, with a little luck.”
Portimonense, now in ninth place, next welcome Chaves to their municipal stadium on Saturday week.
