A game of two halves

Portimão’s latest attempt to climb out of the Liga Orangina league table basement enjoyed a positive start in Lisbon last Sunday afternoon.

Manager Lazaro Oliveira’s team dominated Belenenses during the first half and deservedly took the lead through Vitor Gonçalves after 20 minutes.

The Algarveans failure to increase that advantage was punished just before the interval, however, when Rodrigo Antonio equalised from the home side’s first meaningful attack of the game.

After the re-start the men from Belem found their feet and Portimonense did well to maintain the stalemate which ultimately permitted a share of the points.

Still eight points adrift of safety, last season’s top tier participants really must beat Santa Clara on home turf this Sunday to retain any hope of avoiding the drop into second division anonymity. S.B.
