Portimão’s educational farm Quinta Pedagógica received around 38,000 visitors last year.
The majority of visitors were children and youths from across the Algarve undertaking projects in the areas of education, health, agro farming and for leisure purposes.
The farm, located in Bairro Novo da Boavista, offers a vast programme of activities focusing on good environmental practices, rural life and animal welfare.
But social welfare is also high on the Quinta Pedagógica’s list of priorities and last year it distributed more than 700kg of fruit and vegetables to various local charitable institutions as well as to schools in the Portimão council.
Visitors to the market at Av. S. João de Deus can also find a stall manned by members of the Quinta team, who sell jams, fruit and vegetables produced in the farm, in a bid to raise awareness about the facility and services offered, which are supported by Portimão Câmara.
Animal-assisted therapies, such as hippotheraphy (with horses) and asinotherapy (with donkeys), and adapted activities are also provided by a trained team and are aimed at people suffering from various levels of physical and mental disabilities.
The farm project is seen as a vital instrument in the education of future generations towards the most elementary aspects of life which are so important and should be promoted in the community.
Entrance to the farm is free.
