A Dutch pilgrimage to El Rocio

A unique exhibition entitled ‘Ida Y Vuelta’ will be opening at the new gallery in Museu do Trajo in São Brás de Alportel on Saturday, September 15 at 7pm.

A group of Dutch artists, some of them living and working in the Algarve, mingled with the pilgrims, Spanish families and gypsies during the well known Romeria of El Rocio in Andalusia.

While literally biting the dust, they have transformed their experiences into photography, film, sketches, paintings and poetry.

The reflexion of these emotional and exhausting five days and nights have resulted in an art project that depicts a gripping image of this pilgrimage.

Because of his advanced age, renowned Dutch artist Jan Sierhuis could not be in El Rocio in person, but will take part in the exhibition with a number of flamenco inspired works of art. Other artists showing their artwork are Ria Nieswaag, Jane Page, Thessa van der Voort, Nico Koster, Anita Mizrahi, Anna Theeuwes and Erik van Lint.

The exhibition will be opened by Dutch author Tessa de Loo and will be a night of flamenco, filled with dance, singing, poetry and film from 7pm until late.

The Romería de El Rocío is a traditional pilgrimage held on the second day of Pentecost to the Hermitage of El Rocío in the countryside of Almonte, Province of Huelva, in honour of the Virgin of El Rocío.

Nearly one million people from across Andalucia and many other parts of Spain take part in the pilgrimage.
