A busy weekend at the Casuals

news: A busy weekend at the Casuals

LAST WEEKEND was certainly a busy one at the Casuals sports club, at St. Julian’s School in Carcavelos, with two visiting teams playing hockey and football.

First was the Casuals’ senior hockey team, who played against a team from Essen, Germany. The Essen boys, much more experienced in the first period, did not have it all their way, with Peter (Evergreen/Everton) scoring a well executed goal within a few minutes.

The Essen team got their revenge, after some sloppy defending allowed them to put in past the ‘keeper. Later, the Casuals scored again through Nabney, but, in the remaining two periods, it all went downhill for the Casuals – tired legs, poor defence and a penalty miss. The Essen boys put another six past the Casuals ‘keeper, coming out the victors by 7 to 2.

Next came the Casuals football team, who played a team of veterans from Borba in the Alentejo. The game soon got underway on the grass pitch, with some good play from both teams. The Casuals were playing well with good defensive work, but then it all began to fall apart – a lot of banter and arguing set in, spoiling the game. Although Seabra, Ventura and Ayash scored for the Casuals, the men from Borba got five past the Casuals ‘keeper. Sunday’s game against Óbidos fared a lot better, with the Casuals coming away with a 5-1 win (Fernandes 2; Jones, Sousa and Martelo 1 each).
