9,000 Francesinhas sold in Setúbal’s first ‘Festival das Francesinhas’

Setúbal’s first festival to celebrate the the ‘francesinha’ (a delicacy more often associated with Porto), went with an absolute bang. Between August 10-15 no less than 9,000 francesinhas were purchased and consumed, with gusto, in the Largo José Afonso. Said a source for the town hall, the festival was “always full”. For those unfamiliar with the francesinha, it is a kind of Portuguese ‘hamburger’: made with bread, wet-cured ham, linguiça, fresh sausage, steak or roast meat, and covered with melted cheese and a hot, thick spiced tomato and beer sauce. It is typically served with French fries.
