900 doctors ask for papers to leave Portugal

With the year still not yet over, Portugal’s doctors association (Ordem dos Médicos) has already issued certificates to 900 doctors intent on emigration.
This is a number that “represents practically double the amount of certificates issued in 2013”, warns the regional doctors council of the north and will effectively cost Portugal untold millions. In 2012, for instance, the loss of doctors to the country represented a cost of €71 million.
Warning of the need to invest in health not cut, the Association for the Innovation and Development of Public Health has said that if statistics include the “cost” of losing hundreds of Portuguese nurses every year, losses to Portugal could top €375 million.
