The tragic case of a GNR officer jailed for nine years for killing a child during a police chase has touched the nation. Over 89,300 people have signed the online petition calling for Hugo Ernano to be pardoned, and the GNR’s professional association (APG) says it has already raised over €9,000 to go towards Ernano’s appeal costs.
Hugo Ernano was jailed by a court in Loures last month – and ordered to pay €80,000 in costs – after shots he fired at a getaway car hit the thief’s young son who was riding along with his father.
Twenty thousand euros of costs awarded against Ernano are to be paid to the father of the dead child – even though the man was on the run at the time, and caught red-handed as he committed yet another felony.
In a statement to Lusa news agency, APG’s regional coordinator in Lisbon Nuno Guedes said: “The wave of solidarity has been massive and from all quarters. The money raised will be very important for Hugo to fight his case in the Supreme Court.”
