More than two thirds of doctors working in the Portuguese State health service (SNS) say they are dissatisfied with the terms and conditions of their employment, while more than a quarter (26%) are planning to quit within the next 12 months or already combining their work with the private sector, a study “Decisive Factors in the Medical Career” conducted by APAH (the Portuguese association of hospital directors) has shown. Reasons for discontent “leave no margin for doubt”, says Jornal de Notícias – 75% point to pay as the principal motive, 63% blame lack of human resources and/ or equipment and 47% believe “an excess of patients” impacts on time and quality of the profession.
