A 60-year-old man is in a “critical but stable condition” in intensive care after being bitten by a Lataste’s viper (Latin name: Vipera latastei, Portuguese name: Víbora cornuda) – one of the very few venomous snakes to be found in Portugal. The man was apparently ‘clearing weeds in his garden’ when he must have surprised the snake, which then attacked.
