5G auction and TDT migration suspended due to Portugal’s “exceptional situation”

Telecoms operators have accepted the State of Emergency means there is no point holding the country’s 5G auction next month.

MEO, NOS and Vodafone have all requested a delay due to “the current exceptional situation in which Portugal finds itself” and regulator ANACOM has agreed.

In a press statement ANACOM said to go forwards as planned would have created difficulties because of the “unpredictability” of the times and impossibility of being able to “evaluate” how events might evolve.

Also pulled is the planned TDT migration of television frequencies (tied in with the development of 5G), as well as public consultation initiatives.

The lifting of this suspension will be announced “at the opportune moment”.
