At least 52.6 million people worldwide are employed as domestic workers and most of them – around 83% – are women, vulnerable to abuse and without adequate legal protection, according to the United Nations agency International Labour Organisation. In Portugal, domestic workers comprise 3.4% of all workers while 7.2% of women with paying jobs work in the domestic sector, well above global averages of around 1% and 2.1% respectively.
