With wildfires already causing trouble in the district of Braga today, 500 firefighters are ‘at the ready’ nationwide between today and next Wednesday to ‘reinforce areas at greatest risk of rural fires at a time when elevated temperatures are being registered’. The unusually hot, dry, often windy weather is due to stay in place until at least mid-week next week – hence 96 teams of firefighters “in greater readiness during this period, to reinforce the initial attack capacity on rural fires”, says a statement from the ministry of the interior. The two wildfires in Braga toiday are being fought with the help of air support. They are in Cervães, Vila Verde, and Fafe. No homes appear to be ‘at risk’ at this point.
